Shibuya Station in short

Four operators serve the station: JR, Tokyu, Keio and Tokyo Metro. The crossing is directly in front of the Hachiko Exit.

The station is still being rebuilt, and the work is planned in stages until fiscal year 2034. Expect signs, detours and construction around the building for years. Follow the signs, and keep some extra minutes in your schedule when you change trains.

The Yamanote Line also connects Shibuya with Harajuku, and the Fukutoshin Line serves Meiji-jingumae. See the Harajuku and Omotesando guide for the walk and the shrine.

Hachiko Exit and South Gate

The Hachiko Exit leads straight to the crossing. It is also the busiest gate. JR points to the South Gate as an alternative, about 250 m from the Hachiko square and the crossing. If the Hachiko Exit is packed, walking from the South Gate can be calmer.

The Hachiko statue stands in the Dogenzaka area, close to the crossing and the Hachiko Exit. It is a popular meeting point, but do not count on it every evening. The statue area is planned to be fenced off from 30 October 2026, 6 a.m., until the morning of 1 November. See the Halloween guide and the Hachiko page.

The ride time is the timetable time between stations. It leaves out the walk to the platform, waiting and any change of trains. Fares for other JR, Tokyu and Keio rides differ, so check them at the ticket machine or on the route planner you use.

The Asakusa ride takes you to the old temple district. Directions for the other end are on the Senso-ji getting there page.

The station rebuild

Years of work, in stages.

What is planned

The station and the pedestrian network are planned to be largely complete in fiscal year 2030. Phase II of Shibuya Scramble Square, with a middle and a west building, is planned for fiscal year 2031. Further completions run until fiscal year 2034.

What that means for you

Do not plan around a finished station soon. Japanese fiscal years run from April to March, so they do not match calendar years. Shibuya Sky keeps its own opening hours, so check them before you go.

Dates and traffic to know

Seasonal rules and planned changes with dates.

Halloween weekend

Police plan traffic controls from the evening of 30 October 2026 to the early morning of 1 November. Inokashira-dori and Dogenzaka may be affected, depending on the situation. Parking meters around the station are out of service all day. Details are on the Halloween page.

By car

The parking garage at PARCO costs JPY 320 per 30 minutes on weekdays and JPY 400 on weekends and holidays, and is open 07:00 to 24:00. From the north side, you may only turn left into the entrance from Organ-zaka. Turning right is not allowed.

Delays

The line status changes during the day. Check the operator's status page on the day of travel. For the Yamanote Line, the status information covers 04:00 to 02:00.
