Choosing an area around Shibuya

Shibuya is a major rail hub. The crossing lies right in front of the Hachiko exit, so a hotel near the station puts you within a few minutes of the main sights. The trade-off is crowds and, on some streets, night noise.

This page names areas, not hotels. Check the exact street, the room position and current rates on the booking page before you pay. Rates and availability change daily.

The areas in more detail

What each one offers and what it asks of you.

Near the station

You can be at the crossing in minutes, and several lines meet here. The area is busy from morning to late evening. Look at the hotel's access route, since the Hachiko Gate is often crowded and the South Gate is an alternative.

Dogenzaka

This is a nightlife area. Do not assume it is always loud or always quiet. Choose by street: look at where the entrance is, how close the nearest club is, and what the room faces.

Shibuya at night โ†’

Ebisu

Ebisu lies south of Shibuya and combines living streets, restaurants, shops and green space. It is on three JR lines and the Hibiya line. Whether a street is quiet depends on the street, so check it before you book.

Harajuku and Omotesando

Harajuku suits walkers: the Takeshita Street, the Meiji Jingu forest and Omotesando are close together. Omotesando is about 10 minutes on foot from Harajuku. You trade the shortest way to the crossing for a base built around walks.

Asakusa as an alternative

If you want an older district and the Senso-ji temple, a stay in Asakusa works as a separate base. See where to stay in Asakusa. From Shibuya, the Ginza Line takes about 33 minutes to Asakusa on the timetable, at JPY 252 with an IC card (2026).

What to check before you book

A short list that avoids the common surprises.

Street and room position

Look at the street view and the floor. Entrance location, nearby bars and the side the room faces matter more than the district name.

Halloween nights

If you stay near the station from 30 October to 1 November 2026, police traffic controls are announced. Inokashira-dori and Dogenzaka may be affected, and parking meters around the station are switched off all day. The Hachiko statue area is fenced. Plan your arrival time and your taxi drop-off point.

Cancellation, taxes and extras

Hotel taxes, breakfast and family rules differ by property. Read cancellation terms and any accommodation tax on the booking page for your dates.

Accessibility

Ask the hotel directly about lifts, step-free access and room layout. Do not infer it from the area.

Where to stay in Shibuya: frequently asked questions

Is Shibuya a good area to stay in?

It suits first visits and short trips, because many rail lines meet at the station and the crossing is right outside. It is busy, so choose the street with care if you want quiet.

Is Dogenzaka noisy?

It is a nightlife area, but noise depends on the exact street and the room. Check the hotel's position relative to nearby clubs instead of relying on the district name.

Is Ebisu a good alternative to Shibuya?

Ebisu is south of Shibuya, with restaurants, shops and green space, and it is served by JR lines and the Hibiya line. It is a residential alternative. Check the street if quiet matters to you.

Can I walk from Harajuku to Shibuya?

As a rough guide it takes about 20 minutes between Harajuku Station and the Shibuya area. Omotesando is about 10 minutes from Harajuku. Crowds and sightseeing stops add time.

Which station exit is best for the crossing?

The Hachiko exit leads straight to the crossing but is often crowded. The South Gate is about 250 m from the Hachiko square and is the suggested alternative.
